| Summary: | Report presenting an initial assessment of a sample of unstratified pottery waste material recovered from four spoil tips at The Convent School. The purpose of the report was to provide an initial catalogue by sherd count for sgraffito wares, plain slip wares and coarsewares in preparation for further work. Not all the recovered material is kiln waste; some represents domestic dumping, confirmed by the presence of clay pipe stems, bottle glass and a sherd of Bristol/Staffs ware. However, the bulk of the material is the product of kiln dumping. Given the mixture of both sgraffito and plain slipwares a late 17th or early 18th century date is suggested for the material. |
