Summary:The results of archaeological recording within Forts 1 and 3 carried out during construction and conservation works at Berry Head as part of the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust’s ‘On the Edge’ Project. In Fort 1 a building recording and excavation was undertaken and details about the original layout and construction of the guardhouse, magazine and kitchen were revealed. This included two previously hidden fireplaces in the guardhouse. In Fort 3, building recording and excavation was carried out on the guardhouse and Second World War/Cold War Royal Observer Corp building. Features uncovered included part of a timber framed building and a short length of tunnel forming part of a drainage system. The report also includes an appendix on the analysis of the animal and fish bones from the rubbish pits excavated in 2009.
