Title:Land at Venn Farm, Sowton, Devon: An Archaeological Magnetometer Survey

Summary:Substrata were commissioned by Cotswold Archaeology in 2023 to conduct an archaeological magnetometer survey of c. 19 hectares of land at Venn Farm on the outskirts of Exeter in Devon. Forty-one geophysical anomaly groups were detected of which all were interpreted as representing potential buried archaeological deposits. The most common anomaly type detected were long positive linear anomalies, the majority of which are thought to represent the medieval or post-medieval field system. Several very subtle circular features were detected of similar size, interpreted as ring-ditches of uncertain date. A rectangular anomaly is interpreted as an enclosure of uncertain date. Several general spreads of increased response were encountered which may indicative of areas of past human activity however a natural soil conditions may give rise to these. Additionally, a number of ditch and pit-like anomalies were detected across the Survey Area of uncertain date and function.
