| Summary: | Some of the world's most important collections of ethnographic specimens from the Pacific were assembled in Devon in the period 1790-1820. The paper shows that the Tahitian mourner's dress and other objects now at Exeter Museum were collected on Bligh's Second Breadfruit voyage to Tahiti in 1791-1793. Five other collections of Pacific artefacts formed in Devon are described; they included many pieces from Captain Cook's voyages. The motivations behind the country gentlemen and naval officers who formed these collections are discussed briefly and the significance of the Devon and Exeter Institution is emphasised. |
