Title:A Reluctant Revolution: The Evidence of Devon (and some Somerset and Cornwall) Churchwardens' Records concerning the Construction and Maintenance of Roodlofts and Screens immediately prior to, and after, the Reformation in England
Originator:Williams, M. A.
Date:2019
Summary:The controversy over whether or not the Reformation – especially in South-West England – was imposed from above upon a reluctant people, or welcomed by the majority of the population, is one which has not lost its power. Primary evidence, mainly for Devon but also to a lesser degree from Somerset and Cornwall, indicates that, seen through the medium of the roodloft, a strong case may be made that in these Westcountry counties the Reformation was unwelcome. The involvement of parishoners of all classes in the cost of construction and, later, maintenance of the roodlofts may well indicate that their loss (or at best ‘transposition’) was deeply unwelcome.
