Title:Anglo-Saxon Barnstaple and Pilton: New Perspectives on Old Settlements
Originator:Clarke, W.
Date:2020
Summary:The Anglo-Saxon origins and evaluation of Barnstaple and neighbouring Pilton, and the contribution of a possible ‘Pilton burh’ to their unique relationship, are re-examined here in an attempt to shed further light on Barnstaple’s identity as a settlement, regional Anglo-Saxon stronghold and putative site for the exercise of justice. Existing documentary and archaeological records and topographical evidence are re-evaluated using new data from local burial sites, and an interpretive analysis of local and national place-name etymology.
