Full description

Low, square motte with semi-circular bailey to NE. On E side of motte are the remains of a flint keep possibly begun c.1136, destroyed 1212, with walls standing 2.5m high. A wide ditch surrounds the motte on S & E, landscaped to N & W <1>. The Gatehouse, in Norman style, of stone and flint, was built in 1832 <2>. The remains of earthworks containing medieval pottery were found outside the nearby churchyard [12009] <3>.
The original earthworks may have been dug for Peter de Valognes, sheriff in 1086; his son, Roger, probably erected the masonry castle c1136. It passed to Robert fitz-Walker on his marriage at the end of the 12th century and was destroyed when he was outlawed in 1212 <4>. See <4> for the condition of the remains.
