Summary

Medieval and post-medieval historic settlement core of Thorpe Arnold, as deduced from historic mapping etc. Documentary evidence suggests there was a castle at Thorpe Arnold (no known remains exist) and a watermill is recorded in the Domesday Book.

Additional Information

There are no known remains that could be ascribed to a castle. (PL 06/09/88)

One mill in Domesday Book valued at 5s 4d. (RPJ March 87)

Cantor includes Thorpe Arnold in a list of castles in the county.

Nichols included Thorpe Arnold in a list of castles in 1795. He said that a castle was founded by Eonald de Bois but on what basis is not known.
