Full description

TRIPLE MOATED EPISCOPAL PALACE OF THE SEE OF DURHAM. 1 MOAT REMAINS. MENTIONED IN 14TH CENT. 16TH CENT REPAIRS TO CHAPEL AND 'DRAWDIKE'. 1662 REFERENCES TO THE OLD GATEHOUSE AND WATER GATE HOUSE. IN THE 18TH CENT A FARMHOUSE WAS BUILT ON THE SITE. EXTENSIVE FOUNDATIONS NOTED IN 1856. THE REMAINS OF A MOAT AROUND THE PALACE SITE AT WHEEL HALL SAID IN THE C19TH AND 1947 TO BE SURROUNDED BY A TRIPLE MOAT WITH THE RIVER OUSE FORMING THE SW SIDE. THE OS 1:10000 MAP (1989) SHOW ONLY THE NW AND NE SECTIONS SURVIVING
