"The evidence for a cemetery at Haltonchesters consists in the group of three tombstones, now listed as RIB 1433,1435 and 1436, the findspots of which imply a cemetery a short distance south of the fort. It was because of them that I took steps to have the appropriate conventional sign put on the Hadrian's wall map". (2)
Area NY997678. RIB 1433. A fragment of a tombstone was seen about 1600 at Halton Castle. Now at Trinity College, Cambridge.
RIB 1435. Tombstone found before 1840 at, or near, Halton Chesters. Now in the Black Museum, Newcastle.
RIB 1436. Fragment of tombstone found at Halton Castle in 1868 when lowering the stable yard. (3) |
