More information : SJ 738 882. The former Ministry of Agriculture Food and Fisheries Buffer Depot or food store at Dunham Town lay within Home Defence Region 10. It was allocated Depot Number 562C and was operated by the Cheshire Storage Company Limited on behalf of the government. The depot was situated 3km west of Altrincham on the northern bank of the Bridgewater Canal. Although the depot was not directly served by railway, the now dismantled line to Warrington crossed a lane leading to the depot less than 500m to its north.
The depot occupied a rectangular site delimited by a low post and wire fence supported on concrete posts. The site has been cleared, and is covered by a modern housing estate contained within the former depot perimeter.
Historic air photographs reveal that the depot was built between July 1941 and August 1945. The depot consisted of two three aisled stores with pitched roofs, with single storey office buildings attached to their eastern ends. In form they appear identical to the depot at Sale (SJ 79 SE 18). (1-1d)
