More information : SJ 4940 6046. The former Ministry of Agriculture Food and Fisheries Buffer depot or foodstore at Tattenhall lay in Home Defence Region 10 and was allocated depot number 344B. The depot is situated 11km southeast of Chester, and lies in a triangle of land bounded by the Chester to Crewe railway line, the Shropshire Union Canal and a minor lane to Tattenhall. Adjacent to the depot is the former Tattenhall railway station. In common with other depots of this design in the county it was probably constructed during the Second World War and is shown on a 1953 air photograph.
The depot building is a three aisled structure, each aisle is covered by a pitched roof clad in asbestos sheeting, which is also carried down to eaves height on the gable walls. The walls are of brick laid in English garden wall bond. The northern elevation is pierced by steel framed windows serving the office accommodation, entry to the storage bays was through three sliding doors on its eastern side, the remaining elevations are blind. The depot is surrounded by a low post and wire fence with concrete fence posts. No internal inspection of the building was made.
Adjacent to the depot is a microwave radio transmitter mast. (1-1b)
