More information : A Roman milestone of Constantine was found on the Roman road from Carlisle to Penrith, near Hesket, in 1760. It was preserved at Hoddam Castle, Dumfriesshire, and seen by Pennant, but now apparently lost. (1-2) Details of inscription. 2288. Milestone, 26 in. high, 14 in. wide, found in 1766 in the parish of Hesket on the Roman road between Carlisle and Penrith. Gough recorded it in, or shortly after, 1768, as being at Armathwaite Castle, 9 miles south-east of Carlisle. Pennant, probably wrongly, cited it as seen in 1772 at Hoddom Castle. Now lost.
