Summary : A Roman tombstone of a Roman cavalryman with an almost obliterated inscription; it may be read "Milites Manipulares Legionis victribus (posuerunt)" and a fragment of a figure of Victory were found at Stanwix church. It consisted of a globe, 11 inches in diameter on which rests the foot of a Victory, broken off at the ankle, with some drapery adhering. The statue was evidently life-sized. Now in the Museum of the society of Antiquaries, Newcastle.
More information : (NY 40145704) A sculptured stone of a Roman cavalryman with an almost obliterated inscription; it may be read "Milites Manipulares Legionis victribus (posuerunt)", was found in the wall of the parish church at Stanwix in 1787. Now in the possession of Colonel Senhouse of Nether Hall. (1)

A sculptured stone found about 1790 in the wall of Stanwick parish church is evidently a cavalryman's tombstone, most of the inscription having been broken off. (2)

Tombstone of whitish sandstone found in 1787 in the wall of Stanwix Church. Now at Netherhall (NY0436) built into the veranda. Wrongly ascribed to Maryport by Bruce (Edn 2) and Huebuer (Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum 7 406). (3)

A fragment of a figure of Victory was found when the old church of Stanwix was demolished. A globe, 11 inches in diameter on which rests the foot of a Victory, broken off at the ankle, with some drapery adhering. The statue was evidently life-sized. Now in the Museum of the society of Antiquaries, Newcastle (Acc No 282 in the 1926 catalogue). (4-5)
