More information : (Area NY 41305468) A Roman milestone was discovered in the bed of the River Petteril, just below Gallows Hill, during alteration to the river banks prior to 1893-5. The stone, which is cylindrical, had two inscriptions, one at each end, the first to Marcus Aurelius, AD 287-293, and the second to Constantine the Great AD 306-337. The stone, which probably originally stood on the top of Gallows Hill, would mark the first mile out of Carlisle. (1-2) The milestone is in Tullie House Museum. Full details of inscriptions (3).
