Summary : Roman quarry on the West bank of the River Gelt with Roman inscription and altar cut by Roman quarrymen whilst repairing Hadrian's Wall during the early 3rd century. Scheduled.

Near ground level on the rock-face at Pigeon Crag on the south side of the river Gelt is a Roman quarry-inscription 55" long with the tallest letters 6" high. On the rock-face some 9' further south is a small niche where a projecting altar has been cut. (2)

The inscription and projecting altar are still visible but badly weathered. The altar measures 0.1m high by 0.075m wide. See photographs.
