Summary : Sixteen altars from the area around Castlesteads fort; one is inscibed templem and may indicate the possible site of temple(s). The altars are dedicated to Mithras and the offical state gods. Now stored in the summer house in the Rose Garden at Castlesteads. |
More information : (NY 511 635) At least 23 inscribed stones including 16 altars have been found in and around Castlesteads fort (Uxellodunum). The 16 altars comprise Nos 1976 - 1990 and 1996. The inscribed stones Nos 1995, 1997 and 1998 - 2002. (1)
Lewis mentions only No 1988 (which includes the word 'templum' in the inscription) but the number of others indicates the possible existence of further temples. (2)
In the summer house in the Rose Garden at Castlesteads (NY 5116 6344) are nine altars. Fourteen inscribed stones are recorded under NY 56 SW 56. (3) |
