More information : (TG 0079 1935) Roman Brass Parade Helmet and remains found AD 1947-50 (NAT). (1) Remains of a possible Roman bridge, found by dredging in 1947, consisting of two lines of oak piles c.8' apart across a channel west of an island in the River Wensum (at TG 00781956 - see map). Mr A W G Lowther dates the piles by dendrochronology at possibly c.130 AD. Also found in the area of the piles to a hundred yards downstream were a Roman military dress helmet of brass, a pair of leg-irons (possibly C1st/C2nd) and Romano-British Sherds (C1st/C2nd). Helmet in Norwich Museum. (2) A visor mask was found in 1950 in the silt dredged up in 1947. Probably the same date as the helmet previously found, but not part of it. (3) No traces of the bridge were seen at the indicated site, much additional dredging and quarrying now having taken place. (4)
