More information : [NY 61566551] Church [NAT] (1) Upper Denton church, restored in 1881, is built of Roman stones, the chancel arch being a reconstructed Roman arch probably brought from Birdoswald Roman fort (NY 66 NW 14). A Roman altar dedicated to Jupiter was found in 1881 reused in the steps to the altar. It is now (1941) in the garden of Gilsland Vicarage. Although the church contains Norman material Pevsner comments that the east quoins are of the Anglo Saxon type with some upright stones. Grade B. (2-4)
The church is in normal use. Although the east quoins are of long and short work, they do not appear to be of any great age. The present whereabouts of the altar could not be ascertained. (5)
Upper Denton church (wrongly described as St. Cuthberts) consists of simple nave and chancel and is largely built of Roman stone with some Saxon and much Norman masonry. (6)
