More information : (NY 99343519) ROMAN ALTAR (R) (Site of) (1) There is no record of the findspot of the Bollihope Roman altar although "in 1943 however Mr J E Maddison of Stanhope showed me a place which he had been told was the exact findspot.....NY 993352. "Excavation at this location revealed nothing archaeological. (2) 1041. Altar, 16 x 36in. (1/8), found in 1747 on Bollihope Common, south of Stanhope in Weardale. On the left-hand side GE (inverted) was cut in later times. Now (1941) at Stanhope Rectory. Drawn by R.P.W., 1941. CIL vii 451, addit. p. 309. JRS xxxii (1942) 115, pl. II i. ILS 3562. LS 683. There are traces of a primary inscription in 11. 1, 2 and of indistinct lettering on the middle plinth of the base. The removal of the primary inscription has made the die rather concave. Primary text: [Numinibus August]orum / et [... Secondary text: Siluano Inuicto sacr(um) / G(aius) Tetius Veturius Micia/nus pr[(a)e]f(ectus) alae Sebosian/nae ob aprum eximiae / formae captum quem / multi antecesso/res eius praedari / non potuerunt u(oto) s(uscepto) l(ibens) p(osuit) Primary text: 'To the Deities of the Emperors and ....' Secondary text: 'To Unconquerable Silvanus Gaius Tetius Veturius Micianus, prefect of the Sebosian Cavalry Regiment, on fulfilment of his vow willingly set this up for taking a wild boar of remarkable fineness which many of his predecessors had been unable to bag.' I. S...C...VM Bruce; [NVMINIBVS AVGVST]ORVM / ET R.P.W. 2. SAC Bruce, Hueb.; SACR R.G.C. 3. PRAEF AIAE SEBOSIAA Gough; PRAE AIAE SEBOSIAM Bruce; PRAEF AIAE SEBOSIA Hueb.; PR[E]F ALAE SEBOSIAN R.G.C. In CW 2 xxxvi (1936) 113 Mr. (now Professor) Richmond observed that this inscription 'may suggest that the ala Sebosiana once occupied Binchester'. He now (1955) considers that since the secondary dedication is unlikely to be earlier than the third century, when Binchester was occupied by the ala Vettonum, Micianus may well have been on a visit from Lancaster, where his regiment was stationed at the time. (3) NY 9974 3906. The altar is now preserved within the old rectory, Stanhope. (4) Access to the old rectory unobtainable during field investigation. (5)
According to public feedback the altar is now in the north aisle of Stanhope church. (6)
