More information : (NZ 195355). 2294. Part of a cylindrical milestone of millstone grit, 15 in. high, 15 in. wide (1/8), found about 1910 on the line of the Roman branch-road to the north-east from Willington, Co. Durham, on the east side of Willington Burn and west of Cumberland Terrace, Willington (see map in AA4xv (1938) 365). Rediscovered in 1941 in the garden of Laurel House, Willington. The inscribed face is rounded but the back is broken off, and the upper and lower parts of the column have been cut off. It is probably not to be identified with the milestone which was found about 1/2 mile west of Willington shortly before Hutchinson's visit, in or before 1794, for this was 'squared down and defaced, to make the pillar of a shed for cattle'. Now (1942) in the possession of Mr JJ Wilkinson at Laurel House. Drawn by RPW,1942. JRS xxxiii (1943) 80 pl. VII 2. Wilkinson PSAN4x (1943) 89. See also Hutchinson Durham iii (1794) 318. Imp(eratori) Caes ari Marco Ant(onio) Gordiano [... 'For the Emperor Caesar Marcus Antonius Gordianus ....' Gordian III, A.D. 238-44. See also RIB 2289, 2295. (1) This milestone has now been moved by Mrs D Wilkinson to Cherry Tree House, Wolsingham. (2) The milestone was removed from Cherry Tree House (NZ 07153725) Wolsingham about 1975. Mrs. Wilkinson is now deceased and its whereabouts are unknown. (3)
In 1974 the milestone was bequeathed to the Department of Archaeology at Durham University by the late Mrs D. Wilkinson and is now in the Old Fulling Mill, The Banks, Durham. (4)
