| Summary : A centurial stone 16" x 12" inscribed AVI DIRVFI (The Centuria of Avidius Rufus), was unearthed in November 1904 on the military road at West Denton, a few yards west of the lane leading S.W. to Newburn on the site of the Roman Wall, during the construction of a new pipe line. Presented to Soc of Antiqs Newcastle by Mr. A. L. Forster, company engineer of Newcastle and Gateshead, Water Company. |
