Summary : Three Roman centurial stones were built into walls of Iron Sign Farm, but are now lost. They were inscribed "C (enturia) ( ) isi V (e) ri", "Coh (ortis) viii C (enturia) F1 (avi) Latini" and "C (enturia) Hos (tili) Lupi". |
More information : In the north face of the farmhouse known as Iron Sign (NZ 1037 6767), formerly the Iron Sign Inn, are three centurial stones. They were seen by Bruce in 1851 (1b) and read:- Roman Inscriptions Britain (R.I.B) No 1408 "C (enturia) ( ) isi V (e) ri" R.I.B. No 1409 "Coh (ortis) viii C (enturia) F1 (avi) Latini" R.I.B. No 1410 "C (enturia) Hos (tili) Lupi" The expansion to Hostilius is more likely than Hosidius or Hostius. (1a-e) (R.P.W.). There is much Roman stone in the buildings of this farm (1b) (1-1e). (1)
Many of the outbuildings are now gone. No stones were seen in the remaining buildings. The occupier has no information. (2)
