More information : A Roman inscribed stone is preserved by Lord Leconfield at Petworth. (1) The stone is in the possession of Lord Egremont, and displayed in the North Gallery at Petworth House. It is described and illustrated as No. 883 in R G Collingwood and R P Wright, The Roman Inscriptions of Britain, vol 1, as "Part of a red sandstone altar, 20 x 30 ins, found in 1866, built into Cockermouth Castle (Cumberland) presumably taken from the Roman fort at Papcastle, 1 mile to the NE".
