Church Of St Mary Le Wigford

Summary : Saxon and later. Norman tower adjoining an earlier nave. The latter was remodelled in the period 1258-79 when the chancel and North aisle were also remodelled. Restored 1872, 1877 and 1908. There are seven fragments of 10th and 11th century stonework built into the fabric of the church, including a cross-shaft, grave markers, grave slabs and an architectural panel. The later is a reused Roman inscribed tombstone which bears a Saxon inscription dated to 1070-90. This is a dedicatory panel recording the construction of the west tower of the church.

The church of St. Mary le Wigford has a Norman tower which appears to have been added to an earlier nave. The existing nave, chancel, and north aisle are Early English in style, probably built 1258-79. (2-3)

Church. C11, C12, C13. South aisle 1877 by Leach of Cambridge. Restored 1872 by R C Clarke of Nottingham. Tower restored by Watkins & Son, 1908. Additions and alterations 1975. Dressed stone and coursed rubble, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. Nave and aisles have coped gables. PLAN: west tower, nave and chancel under continuous roof, aisles, north chapel, vestry. Listed Grade I. (5)
