More information : (SD 6227 8588) Roman Milestone (R) (1)
A Roman milestone found while ploughing in 1836, and removed about 200 yards to its present position. It is a cylindrical column, inscribed MP LIII (a later Latin inscription was added by the land owner to mark its re-erection). The mileage is possibly from Carlisle, the date perhaps c.200AD. The lack of dedication to an Emperor or similar is unusual, and unexplained. (2)
