Summary : 17 Roman altars were found in nine pits in this area, they were probably located beside a parade ground, although there is no surface trace of this site.
More information : [NY 0422 3742] Altars found A.D. 1870 [T.I.] (1) 17 Roman altars were found in 1870, in 9 pits covering an area of 20 yards x 16 yards. Where there was more than one altar to a pit (6 cases) they had been buried inscribed face down, and were separated by earth and cobble layers. Now in Netherhall collection, Nos. 27-33, 35-44. (2) The altars are dedicatory and probably mark the site of an early parade ground (3a). The area around NY 0422 3742 was investigated during the RCHME survey of Maryport Roman fort (NY 03 NW 13) in 1992/3. The parade ground is not visible on the ground or on air photographs. (3)
