Ripon Gates, No 420g. Descheduled. (4)
The Ripon Gate was originally known as Studley Great Gate and comprises a gate (National Trust Number 30091) and two adjoining lodges; Golf Cottage (30092) and East Lodge (30092). Leo Metcalf was commissioned by George Aislabie to build the gate in 1685. However, the lodges are later in date, they are first documented on a sketch map of 1738 and were probably built for John Aislabie with advice from Colen Campbell. The lodges were also enlarged in 1840. The main gate has a round-arched carriage entrance flanked by pedestrian entrances, and the lodges are T-shaped in plan, of one storey with three bays. (5-6) |
