Summary : Three storey Jacobean country house built between 1607-12, to designs by Robert Liming, to replace Old Palace. The west wing was gutted by fire in 1835. Built of brick with stone dressings.

A fine example of early 17th century domestic architecture it is one
of the four or five most important Jacobean mansions in England.
Built by Robert Cecil (first Earl of Salisbury) between 1608-12 using
materials from the adjacent Tudor palace after it was given in
exchange for Theobalds by King James I. In good condition but has
undergone frequent repairs and alterations. The W wing was
gutted by fire in 1835. (2-4)
