More information : (TL 10729908 ) ROMAN CAMP (R) (Site of) (NAT) (1)
Two enclosures listed by authority 2 under "Roman SettlementSites":- TL 10729908 An enclosure immediately east of Ermine Street (RR 2c), orientated askew to Ermine Street itself but almost at right angles to the Roman Road to Wansford (RR 571), which joins Ermine Street at this point. A well marked and unusually wide ditch encloses a rectangular area of 1 1/2 acres with rounded corners. There are two entrances, one in the north west corner, and another at the west end of the south side (2). There may have been an almost central gate on the east side (4). No interior features are visible. Nothing is visible on the ground. (2-5)
Described as a "Roman Camp" on St Joseph air photographs. (6)
TL 10639919 A second enclosure lies immediately north west of the first. A narrow ditch encloses an almost square area of about 2 acres with rounded corners. The west side is slightly bowed outwards. There are narrow entrances in the north side near the north west corner, and in the east side near the north east corner. No interior features are visible. There are no surface indications of either of the above enclosures which possibly pre-date the adjacent Ermine Street. (7)
TL 107991 Roman Fort and enclosure at Sutton Cross. (8)
Excavations of one of the enclosures in advance of road construction uncovered pottery and lithic implements suggesting a late Neolithic/early Bronze Age date for the site. (9) |
