St Brendens Church

Hob Uid: 1001590
Location :
Devon
North Devon
Brendon and Countisbury
Grid Ref : SS7500047730
Summary : The church of St Brendans is of 18th century date with substantial alterations in the 19th century and is still in use. Nave, chancel and south porch of 1738, tower rebuilt 1828; the whole restored and north aisle, north transept and vestry added in 1873. The church stands in an isolated position high up to the west of the village. Itreplaced a church of 12th century foundation at Cheriton (in the parish to the south west of the present building) which was abandoned in the early 18th century and of which little now remains. It has also been said that this church was dedicated to St Mary the Virgin.
More information : St Brendan's Church is centred at SS 75004773. It was built in the 18th century with substantial alterations in the 19th century. It is still in use.
An earlier foundation with the same dedication in the nearby village of Cheriton is now marked only by an earthwork platform (see SS 74 NW 10). (1)

The 12th century font, (presumably removed from Cherirton Church) forms a link between the scalloped fonts and the square, plain fonts. Probably mid-late 12th century. It is made of a local North Devon grit. (2)
