Exmoor Firing Ranges

Hob Uid: 1002147
Location :
Devon
North Devon
Brendon and Countisbury
Grid Ref : SS7600046000
Summary : World War II firing ranges were used primarily for British military personnel and later by the US army for heavy artillery practice. Remains indicate heavy vehicle access, infantry exercises and heavy artillery impact areas.
More information : SS 7600 4600. Exmoor Firing Range. Brendon Common was used during WW2 for military training; these activities included infantry tank exercises and artillery practice (a).

Information from the officer responsible for the day to day administration of the ranges (1a) indicates that they were initially used by British military personnel, but were later taken over by the US Army primarily for heavy artillery practice. This usually involved the siting of 105mm artillery pieces outside the designated range area, in locations such as Trentishoe Down and Martinhoe, and firing into the ranges using targets at various locations. The field archaeology supports this general interpretation. Remains indicate both heavy vehicle access, infantry exercises and heavy artillery impact areas. Transcription (b) of air photographs taken in 1946 clearly shows a concentration of activity on Shilstone Hill apparently representing slit trenches and other features.

However, the remains are spread widely over Brendon Common, Malmsmead Hill, Lanacombe, Hoccombe Ridge and thence eastwards towards Tom's Hill and Larkbarrow. See respective 1:10000 sheets. (1)
