More information : (NY 2220 6259) Inscribed stone found AD 1879. (1)

Part of a Roman inscribed slab of red sandstone measuring 3 ft x 16 ins x 2 1/2 ins was found at Bowness in 1790 (3), and a record made of the inscription. The stone was lost soon afterwards. In 1879 the stone was re-discovered in the possession of Mr Robinson of Bowness, who said that his father had ploughed it up, and that he had known it for 30 years. The dimensions in 1879 were 17.5 ins (0.45m) x 8.5 ins (0.22m) wide on the right side and 11 ins (0.28m) wide on the left, but the inscription after cleaning, subject to certain misreadings in the 1791 description, was found to be identical. The stone is now in Carlisle Museum. (2-3)

Full details of inscription. (4)

Dedicated to the Matres - probably site of temple although no structure is known. (See NY 26 SW 27) (5)
