Summary : A charcoal burning platform in Great Birchcleeve Wood is almost circular in form and measures 5m across by 4.6m. It is believed to be of post medieval date.
More information : A charcoal-burning platform lies in Great Birchcleeve Wood centred at SS 87033040, half way up the steep, oak-wooded slope rising from the River Barle to the north-east.

The platform is almost circular and measures 5m across the slope by 4.6m and is cut into slight natural levelling. Around the site there is a large amount of animal burrowing. The surrounding wood contains evidence of ancient coppicing.

There are other similar platforms in both Great and Little Birchcleeve Woods (SS 83 SE 45, 46). (1)
