The Bage

Hob Uid: 104923
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Clifford
Grid Ref : SO2980043380
Summary : Earthwork remains of a motte about 4 metres in height and situated on a promontory, the highest, narrowest point on the Golden Valley. There are traces of a possible ditch on the north east side. The motte was probably created by cutting this ditch across the natural spur of land and using the excavated material to create a motte on the isolated section. A railway embankment has cut into the north west side which has destroyed any evidence for a possible bailey which would seem most likely on this rasied plateau of land. The small pool to the south is man-made and was created in 1977. Scheduled.
More information : SO 2980 4338: Possible motte noted by RCHM photographer from afar. (1)

Small steep-sided, typical Marches motte, standing on the top of the scarp in a bend of the Bach Brook. No trace of a bailey. (2)

A small motte, roughly 3.0 to 4.0m in height, perched on promontory with steep slopes on three sides. There are traces of a possible ditch on the north-east side. A railway embankment has sliced into the north-west side. Any evidence for bailey destroyed by this and recent bulldozing of field to north-west. (3)

SO 298433 (The Bage). Both site and earthwork very much disturbed. (4)

Shoesmith states that there is faint evidence for a bailey. (5)
