"A fortified mount, about 60 yds by 52 yds, rising 12 1/2 ft above the partly wet moat which surrounds it. A stream which runs through part of the ditch appears to have been used as an outer defence to a crescent shaped bailey which lies to the west". [No sign of a bailey on RAF 1946 air photos]. (2)
A motte, some 3.4m high, oval in shape with its longer axis of 40.0m orientated north to south. A ditch remains on the west and north sides but elsewhere has been filled in. The motte lies on the east side of an almost square bailey surrounded by a now shallow ditch which has a stream running through it. There are no traces of buildings on either motte or bailey. Published survey (25") revised. (3)
"Earthworks of a type recognised in the Marches by E A Downman. See, for example, his MSS on Shropshire earthworks in the BM. A motte, surrounded by a ditch. Clearly defensive, and not a mill platform. No trace of a bailey. A leet and other earthworks suggest that the motte defended a mill. Ridge and furrow in surrounding fields, notincluded in scheduled area. Pasture. Partly damaged by post-Med farm on the E. cf Yockleton, Salop (SJ 31 SE 10)". (4)
