More information : (SO) 358372 There are vestiges of a fortified site, probably 13th century, on a low spur above the Hereford to Peterchurch road. "The remains consisted of a scarped raised platform with, on the N and E sides of a very wide berm in the slope of the largely natural contours of the knoll. To the SW the berm was very much narrower with a further scarp below and what appeared to be an unfinished ditch. Defences across the saddle of the promontory to the NW were extremely vague; a thickening of a then existing hedge bank many have represented the last traces of a rampart. The summit of the platform had many irregularities on its surface, sinkings and low indeterminate mounds. There was no trace of any stonework. There were slight traces of a ramp leading up to the SW corner of the fortified area. The site has only recently been ploughed and field boundaries and may of the features shown on the sketch plan have now been bulldozed and erased". The earthwork seems to have been of a type associated with early medieval moated domestic sites such as (the Tump at SO 42 NW 1). (1) Comparing the contours on the plan with the 6" it would seem that the site must be further north than the reference indicates, possibly at SO 35783736 or at SO 35653743. Some vague markings on the APs at the latter reference may be relevant. (2)
