More information : (SO 341574) A mound in Quarry Wood (2) in the grounds of Whittern, was partially excavated by the son of the former owner, the late Capt L H Green. Pottery fragments and possible stone building foundations were found. Dunning (a) identified pottery of c1150, and suggested a possibly 12th century castle site. (1-2)
Quarry Wood, situated upon the SW end-slopes of a low ridge, was replanted by the Forestry Commission about 1965. Growing fir trees and dense secondary growth prevent any ground inspection for the time being. Mrs Green's son now lives in Dorset. (2)
This location falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project, but no motte was identified at this site by that survey. (4) |
