More information : (SO 30445444) Mound (NR). (1)
Circular mound, 23 yds in diameter, rises 4-5 ft above the surrounding ground, and is encircled by a dry ditch with traces of an outer rampart on the W and S and an outer enclosure on the NW. Unclassified. (2)
SO 30445445 What appears to be a low moated motte is sited in a marshy valley bottom.
The flat top of the mound is some 20.0 m in diameter and rises only 1.0 m above the surrounding ground. Fragments of walling show on the perimeter of the mound as do the foundations of a small rectangular building. This is on the NW side and may be of late date as the walls are relatively thin.
The moat, now mainly dry, was fed by a stream from the south, and drained away between retaining banks to the NE.
A small non-defensive enclosure lies to the NW, and beyond this to the W two small elongated mounds `A' and `B' have the size and proportions of pillow mounds, but show no trace of side ditches. 'A' at SO 30325443 lies NW-SE and measures 13.0 m by 4.0 m and is 0.3 m high.
'B' at SO 30395445 lies WSW-ENE and extends 10.0 m by 5.0 m by 0.7 m high.
Both mounds are on "islands" of dry ground in the wet valley bottom but their date and purpose could not be ascertained. (3)
Published survey (25") revised. (4)
[Inspection of site undertaken for the Victoria County History (a) suggested a possible motte, or equally likely the defensive work protecting a homestead]. (5)
