Summary : Earthwork remains of a ringwork in Camp Wood. The mound is 41 yards in diameter at the base and 17 feet in height. it has a continuous rampart except on the west side, and is surrounded except towards the end of the spur, by a ditch 10 feet deep. The castle was founded by Hugh Mortimer circa 1144 to 1154 AD. Scheduled.

Mound in Camp Wood is circular with a diameter of 41 yds at the base and a height of 17ft; it has a continuous rampart except on the W side, and is surrounded except towards the end of the spur, by a ditch some 10 ft deep. (2)

Castle Ring. (First published on OS 6" in the 1949 edition of the County Sheet of 1902. Clearly a descriptive name). (3)

The castle was founded by Hugh Mortimer circa 1144-54. (8)

The castle falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by RCHMEs Marches Uplands Mapping Project but, because the site was covered by trees, the earthworks were not recorded by that survey. (9)
