Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 106544

Hob Uid: 106544
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Titley
Grid Ref : SO3299060250
Summary : Probable remains of a Medieval or later Priory Precinct boundary seen as cropmarks and earthworks.
More information : (SO 329602) Earthwork (NR) (1)

Estate maps of Titley, dated 1769 and 1840, do not show this
earthwork or suggest its purpose.(2)

SO32966011: Only the South west angle and short stretches of
the west and south arms of this earthwork now remain. It
consists of a ditch with banks on both sides and it would appear
to be the remains of the Priory (SO 36 SW11) precinct boundary.
The banks are up to 0.6m high and the ditch 0.9m deep.

Published survey (25") revised. (3)

The bank of the precinct boundary (of Titley Priory) was
bulldozed into the ditch and ploughed. It showed as a dark green
mark in the summer of 1976.
Of the two Fish Ponds on the site one was dry owing to the
unusual weather conditions, the other was being included in the
scheme of landscaping for the garden of Priory Cottage (1976). (4)

The remains of two conjoined enclosures were seen as cropmarks and
earthworks and were mapped from good quality air photographs.
Each is defined by 2 ditches and 1 bank with a maximum length of
180m. These features are thought to form the western and northern
sides of the Priory Precinct boundary described by the previous
authorities. Centred at:-SO 3299 6025
(Morph No. MU.11.2.1)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
