More information : (NY347 593) A Roman Altar was found in the footings of an old cottage being demolished at Beaumont in 1934. The Altar was dedicated to Jupiter and the presiding genius of the numerus of Aurelian Moors, Valerianus' and Gallienus' Own (AD 253-60). It doubtless came from Burgh-by-Sands. (1-2)
Now (1941) in the possession of Mr W H Johnston, Romanway, Beaumont. Full details of inscription. (Site of temple suggested, although not noticed by Lewis' Temples in Roman Britain 1966). (3)
The altar could not be located. Mr Johnston is dead and the present owner of Romanway has no knowledge of it. (4)
