Summary : Built as a cottage hospital in 1874-75 to designs by W H Wheeler. A porter's lodge was added circa 1876 and a new operating theatre in 1877. The hospital became a general hospital in 1886, a new ward was added between 1887 and 1889 and further alterations were carried out before 1900. Various new ward blocks and wings were added during the 20th century, including an outpatients' department in 1926, a nurses home in 1934 and a maternity wing in 1936.
