More information : NY 025 038. Soon after the outbreak of war in 1939 the Royal Ordnance Factory organisation established an Explosives Factory at Sellafield to manufacture TNT. The factory cost #2.5 million and production started in March 1943. It is believed that production ceased at the end of the war in 1945. In 1947 the site was taken over to as part of the British nuclear weapons programme for the construction of two air-cooled reactors. (1-1b)
