Summary : Alleged earthworks which were originally interpreted as the original site of Grosmont Castle. These `earthworks' were found to be a natural hillock and sandstone quarrying. |
More information : SO 416247: Earthworks. According to local tradition this is the original site of Grosmont Castle (SO 42 SW3) but there was no evidence to support this. "The feature is roughly square with what appears to be a ditch on the east side (this peters out as it rounds the north-east corner). The 'enclosed' area is very much disturbed and huge blocks of sandstone are exposed in places. There is definite evidence of quarrying and ... even the 'ditch' and terraced track leading to the site could well have been due to these operations." (1) Disturbed ground obscured by trees (SO 4162 2473). No earthworks visible. (2) There is now no trace of any rectangular feature on this hillock nor is there anything to suggest an artificial feature predating the sandstone quarrying. (3)
