More information : (SO 47263948) EARTHWORK (NR). (1)
The earthwork known as Breinton Camp was partly excavated in 1922 but the results were inconclusive (4). Between 1959 and 1962 further excavations took place. The site, a walled embanked enclosure with a ditch on three sides, was medieval and domestic in character. Building foundations with the enclosure included a cellared portion of the main building. The entrance to the enclosure was on the north side where remains of the stone gateway were uncovered. It was occupied c1150, or soon after, and abandoned some time in the 13th c although it probably then continued in use as a stock enclosure. Heys suggests that the site may have been a grange. The Dean and Chapter of Hereford Cathedral are known to have held land here c 1201. (2-4)
