Summary : Earthwork remains of a motte and bailey. The motte is 2.5 metres high and 45 metres in diameter at the base. it is mutilated on its crest and destroyed in the south west by the construction of Castle Farm, a late 16th or early 17th century timber-framed farmhouse that has been heavily modernised. Traces of a ditch, now 0.4 metres deep remain in the north west, but the bailey to the south west implied by RCHME is apparently natural. The scale of destruction at the site means interpretaion of the castle is ambiguous, and the identification of the motte debatable; it may have been a later fortified manor site. |
