Barras Gate

Hob Uid: 10790
Location :
Cumbria
Carlisle
Dalston
Grid Ref : NY3610050730
Summary : Possibly 16th century gate or bar in Bishop's Dyke to prevent cattle wandering into Dalston village?
More information : (NY36105073) Barras Gate lies on the Dalston side of Barras
Brow at the point where the narrow lane widens to forty feet (1).
Possibly one of the Dalston-Barrs mentioned temp Edward VI
(AD1547-1553) (2) where a gate or bar would continue the line of the
Bishops Dyke (Lin 63) across the road and keep the cattle on the
common (to the NW) from straying into the village, (1); however see
Authorities 4 and 5 on Lin 63 who imply that the earthwork may be
Dark Age. (For other 'Gates' see NY 35 SE 9 & 35 SW 3). (1-2)

No visible remains. (3)
