More information : (SO 450446) Hill Fort (NR). (1) Credenhill Camp (see plan) "The defences consist of a high inner rampart and smaller outer rampart with a medial ditch ... At the present time the inner rampart rises to a height of 23-40 ft above the existing bottom of the ditch". There are inturned entrances at the SE corner and in the middle of the E side. "Considerable damage was done some years ago by quarrying, and some destruction caused by drainage and the formation of paths, but otherwise it is in fairly good condition". During excavations in 1963 by S C Stanford, who describes the feature as a hill-fort of the Western Third B culture, storage pits, Romano-British sherds, and the remains of timber granaries were found. (2-3) Around the crest of Credenhill (SO 451446) is a bivallate contour hill fort. Its inner and stronger bank is up to 9.0m. high, whilst the outer bank rarely exceeds 4.0m. There are two inturned entrances, one in the middle of the east side and the other at the south east corner. Modern quarrying has destroyed any evidence of an entrance in the southwest, and the break in the bank in the north west is probably modern. Published survey 25" revised. (4)
