Summary : Circular mound situated in Shobdon Park, south of the church. It has been described as a small motte, or possible belvedere mount connected with Shobdon Court. Excavation carried out by the Birmingham Univeristy Field Archaeology Unit in 1977/78 revealed a large central hollow and fifteen post holes in the disturbed upper surface, possibly representing the foundations of a post-mill. A wood-lined well or pit was identified in the northeast area. |
More information : (SO 40126258) Mound, 270 yds S of Shobdon church (shown but not described on OS 6" 1964). It is roughly circular, 64ft in diameter at the base and about 11ft high. There is a slight sinking in the top. (1)
Not a motte. The top is too small to have accommodated a castle and the height of 2.6m too low. There is no trace of a ditch. According to the owner (a) there are no historical traditions associated with the mound. Possibly a Belvedere Mount connected with Shobdon Court. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)
SO 401627. Diminutive mound listed by D J Cathcart King as a possible castle site. (3)
Excavation of feature undertaken by the Birmingham Univeristy Field Archaeology Unit in 1977/78 on behalf of the DOE and the landowner revealed a large central hollow and fifteen post holes in the disturbed upper surface, possibly representing the foundations of a post-mill, and a wood-lined well or pit in the N.E. segment.
